Pass the Volvic – Cibo Matto call it quits


Cibo Matto is checking out — the band has announced that Hotel Valentine will be the duo’s final album. Founding members Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori posted a personal message to their fans on their Facebook page about the breakup, and they’ll move on to focus on their solo projects.

Based in New York City, Cibo Matto released two albums in the 90s — Viva! La Woman and Stereo★Type A — which became popular with indie rock fans worldwide, punctuated by their Michel Gondry-directed music video for “Sugar Water”. Their song “Birthday Cake” was used in the video game Jet Set Radio Future. The band went on hiatus in 2002 before reuniting in 2011 for a live concert tour and the release of Hotel Valentine in 2014.

Yuka Honda has been active in the New York music scene, collaborating with Sean Lennon, Mike Watt, Beastie Boys, Los Lobos, Luscious Jackson, and others. She has released three acclaimed solo albums — Memories Are My Only Witness (2002), Eucademix (2004), and Heart Chamber Phantoms (2010).

Miho Hatori has also collaborated with Beck guitarist Smokey Hormel, Sean Lennon, and DJ Towa Tei. here solo album Ecdysis was released in 2005, and she’s known to music fans worldwide as the voice of Noodle from the rock band Gorillaz.
