LUNATIC FEST. 2018
June 23, 2018
Live report by Meiko Kikuta
An even bigger crowd gathered around the stage for GLAY. As the band members later mentioned, GLAY doesn’t usually attend music festivals so having them at this year’s LUNATIC FEST made many visual kei fans excited to join the special event.
The band members walked in under red and orange spotlights. Columns of white smoke were shot up from the stage for the opening song “SURVIVAL”. Fans were hooked instantly by the song which first premiered on TV in late 90s. After fan-favorite song “HOWEVER”, TERU invited TAKAHIRO for “BELOVED”, the bassist AKI from SID for “SHUTTER SPEED no theme”, another member from EXILE, NESMITH, for “Kanjyo no Modern…”, and finally SUGIZO for “Yuuwaku”. GLAY didn’t only play their well-known tunes, but also brought many guests to their stage to collaborate. In addition, they covered LUNA SEA’s “FATE”, reminding the audience that the band was next on stage.

To fan’s surprise, it was JUNJI from SIAM SHADE sitting on SHINYA’s drumset. He soon returned the spot to SHINYA, but it reminded some of the lucky fans about the last LUNATIC FEST. Everyone jumped and bobbed their heads for “Dejavu” and “JESUS”. RYUICHI gently expressed how excited he was to host another LUNATIC FEST after three years. His voice didn’t seem so affected but he revealed that he used too much of his voice at the rehearsal on the day before. INORAN grabbed an acoustic guitar as well as SUGIZO changed his guitar to violin for “Enka”.
Both “Enka” and “I for you” had slower melodies to chill the audience’s mood before some more aggressive rock songs “DESIRE”, “TIME IS DEAD” and “ROSIER” kicked in. In the end, SUGIZO stood at the edge of the stage and gestured everyone to be quiet. “Thank you!” he then shouted to the whole crowd without using a microphone.
LUNA SEA quickly returned for an encore session to perform one more song, “BELIEVE”. JUNJI from SHAM SHADE played drums for the first half of the song. TERU and HISASHI from GLAY, TAKAHIRO and NESMITH from EXILE, MAO and AKI from SID and many others came back on stage to finish the special day with LUNA SEA.
