The Wiltern (Los Angeles) – April 30, 2019
Concert Review by Nhu Nguyen
“Wow, where did all these visual kei kids come from?” I wondered as I watched a near-endless line of people head into the Wiltern Theatre for the GazettE’s THE NINTH world tour kick-off show — fans mobbing the merch table, packing the venue’s floor, all dressed in their goth, industrial, rock and Harajuku-Sunday best to welcome the band back to the U.S. It’s been nearly three years since the visual kei juggernauts’ last show in L.A. and it was clearly the visual kei event of the year. Hell, even Yoshiki was there.
In support of their latest album, NINTH, the band split the tour into four phases: hall, standing, live-house, and the final, international leg of the tour. Naturally, the core of the night’s setlist was largely comprised of the album tracks — all strong, live-ready headbangers starting with intro “99.999’s” chaotic urgent beats then “Falling” and “NINTH ODD SMELL.”
One of the band’s concert strengths lies in the way their setlist is pieced together. It’s a wave, and quite the ride — as it starts heavy and rocking (“GUSH”) to dark and ominous (“The Mortal” and “Sonokoe wa moroku”) then back to heavy rocking with touches of fun (fan favorite “Filth in the Beauty”) and light (“UNFINISHED”)… at least as light and positive-feeling as far as the GazettE’s music could go.
It’s much appreciated that the energy seen in one of the GazettE’s live DVDs can actually be reproduced live, albiet better, of course — nothing beats headbanging and jumping along with the band live to “Filth in the Beauty” and “COCKROACH” or the circus and party atmosphere of “INSIDE BEAST”! The stage production highlights parts that are so much fun live, like Kai’s spotlights flashing along to his drumbeats in “BIZARRE” or the poignant moments like Uruha’s solo-in-the-dark for “Sonokoe wa moroku”.

After 15 plus years together, the GazettE proves that they have the chops to keep their visuals cool and the sound fresh, but most importantly, keep the fans still interested and growing. Their L.A. show proved you just can‘t have a conversation about visual kei without mentioning their name: these guys rock and rule on their own terms.
